PLANTS

Madagascar is home to a vast array of plant and animal life, the majority of which is found nowhere else on Earth.

This biodiversity is due in part to the island’s long isolation from other landmasses. Madagascar split from Africa about 160 million years ago, and from India about 90 million years ago. This isolation allowed plants and animals to evolve independently, leading to the unique species that we see today.
