In March, Wildlife Madagascar took part in major reforestation events at two of our field sites, with over 24,900 native seedlings and trees planted across Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve and La Mananara in a series of powerful, community-led efforts.

20,400 Seedlings Planted at Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve (ASSR)

In March, Wildlife Madagascar participated in major reforestation events along the eastern boundary of Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve (ASSR), using native seedlings grown in our Wildlife Madagascar nursery in Befingotra. This is our first year of reforestation efforts in ASSR, and the results are remarkable: 20,400 seedlings were planted in a community-driven effort involving nearly the entire population of Befingotra, together with Wildlife Madagascar staff, Madagascar National Parks (MNP-Andapa), and representatives from the SAVA Region.

These plantings mark the beginning of a long-term habitat restoration initiative aimed at strengthening forest cover for ASSR’s exceptional biodiversity, including 13 lemur species such as the Critically Endangered silky sifaka (Propithecus candidus) and indri (Indri indri). We look forward to watching these seedlings take root and grow into resilient forests that support both wildlife and local communities. A huge thank you to the Abraham Foundation and IUCN SOS Lemurs for making this transformative work possible!
4,500 Native Trees Planted at La Mananara — Including 80 Children

La Mananara community members and the Wildlife Madagascar team came together in early March for a powerful day of tree planting. There were 230 participants, including 80 children, and this strong turnout reflects the community’s commitment to restoring their forests and protecting local biodiversity. Together, they planted 4,500 native trees, each one representing not only 18 months of careful nursery work, but also a shared investment in the future of their landscape.
The participation of children made this effort especially impactful. By engaging young people directly in conservation, we help foster environmental awareness, build a lasting sense of responsibility, and empower the next generation to care for and protect their forests. Thank you to everyone in La Mananara who made this inspiring day possible!
Help Us Plant a Million Trees

These plantings are part of our broader Let’s Plant a Million Trees campaign — our mission to restore Madagascar’s forests one native tree at a time. In 2024 alone, Madagascar lost 200,000 acres of forest. With four dedicated nurseries across our field sites and a unique seed collection method that harnesses the natural seed-dispersal role of lemurs and bats, every tree we plant helps reconnect fragmented landscapes and protect the species that depend on them.
You can be part of this work: sponsor a native Malagasy tree for just $10, or for $50 have your tree labelled with your name and receive a photo once it’s planted.
