Meet Steve Olsen
Steve Olsen is currently the Director of Conservation Programs with Rewild Safaris (RS). His primary role is to ensure that all the safari adventures have a strong conservation tie back to the range country and local communities. Prior to joining RS, Steve was in charge of the government affairs and partnerships program for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in Washington, DC. He served in this capacity for 24 years before retiring in 2023. Now, he and his wife are continuing their passion for wildlife photography, wildlife conservation, fossil-hunting, and travel.

What do you love most about your work?
The ability to see the impact of small-scale wildlife conservation projects on animals and their surrounding communities.
What sparked your commitment to wildlife and conservation?
Wildlife has been a lifelong passion for me, even while growing up in a large Midwestern city.
What is one of your most memorable travel experiences?
My 30th wedding anniversary candlelight dinner in the Samburu bush courtesy of Rewild Safaris…complete with a chef, a wine steward, and two guards to keep the lions away.
What inspired you to become a member of Wildlife Madagascar?
I am interested in exploring untapped wild places that are rich in wildlife diversity and culture but struggling elsewhere. Wildlife Madagascar is working hard to maintain the former and improve the latter.
