Haingo Andriamiakajato

Student Researcher—La Mananara Site

Haingo has approximately 5 years of conservation and research experience. The majority of her fieldwork has focused on animal biodiversity and human nutrition, particularly within the peripheral areas of the Tsinjoarivo-Ambalaomby Protected Area, where she spent time working with local communities. She has also gained a variety of experience working as a student research assistant at the University of Bristol.

Haingo holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Anthropology and Evolution (2022) and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Biological Anthropobiology and Sustainable Development at the University of Antananarivo.

Q&A with HAINGO

What draws you to a career in wildlife conservation?

I like traveling and experiencing nature, but over time, I noticed that nature was increasingly deteriorating because of humans. This pushed me to study Biological Anthropology and Sustainable Development, leading me to conservation.

Who or what inspires you?

Madagascar’s species biodiversity, which is such an incredible wealth that needs protection.

Is there a book has influenced you or made a strong impression?

My favorite book is the Mammals of Madagascar by Nick Garbutt. This comprehensive guide covers the many unique mammal species of Madagascar, with detailed descriptions and illustrations; it was a great discovery for me.

What is your favorite food?

My favorite food is henakisoa sy ravitoto with rice.

What is your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is “Cheaper by the Dozen”

What is ONE OF THE COOLEST EXPERIENCES YOU’VE HAD IN YOUR WORK?

I attended a field school in 2023 and as part of the training, we had a truly exceptional experience of studying mouse lemurs up close!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I would go to South Africa because there are many species I would like to see, including the Big Five. I have seen several documentaries, all of which make me want to go there and see their incredible wildlife.

Besides lemurs, what is one of your favorite animals, and why?

I love cats! They are calm and kind pets, and petting them reduces my stress.

Why do you care about Madagascar and its wildlife?

Because I love my country! Knowing that 80% of the species here in Madagascar are endemic pushes me to conserve them despite the constant human pressures. I believe that we have a responsibility to protect these animals.
