La Mananara Goes Solar: A Major Step Toward Sustainable Field Operations

After nine months of planning, shipping, building, and installation, Wildlife Madagascar’s La Mananara field station is officially solar powered.

The project involved sourcing and shipping a complete solar system from South Africa, constructing a dedicated building for the equipment and batteries, and bringing in expert installers to complete the work. The result: 24/7 electricity, full-time Wi-Fi, and a working refrigerator, all without relying on a generator.

La Mananara is home to at least 10 lemur species, including the critically endangered indri and diademed sifaka, and this milestone is a major step forward as the station prepares to launch its volunteer program in early May.

Huge thanks to Program Manager Dr. Jacques Rakotondranary for skillfully overseeing this complex project, and to ecotourism partner Madagascar Classic Collection for their indispensable support.
